Overleaf Alternatives in 2026: What to Check Before You Move a Manuscript

A dozen editors now compete with Overleaf. Here are the six capabilities that actually matter months into a manuscript, which tools have them, and what to watch out for in the newer arrivals.

Read it as a considered argument from an interested party, not a neutral survey. We have tried to keep every claim checkable, we say where we are the wrong choice, and we mark anything we could not verify rather than guessing. Check the things that matter to you yourself.

Overleaf made browser based LaTeX normal, and for about a decade the alternatives were desktop editors. That changed fast: there are now a dozen credible options, most launched in the last two years, most with an AI assistant attached.

Feature lists are close to useless for choosing between them. Everything here does syntax highlighting, a PDF preview and a citation search. What separates them are a handful of capabilities you do not notice on day one and cannot work around in month six.

A dash means we could not find the capability stated in the vendor's public documentation as of August 2026. That is not the same as it being absent, and we would rather say so than guess. Tell us if we have something wrong and we will correct it. Pricing moves constantly, so check current plans yourself rather than trusting any comparison page, including this one.

Why those six

Real-time collaboration, and how many people it covers. Papers are written by groups. Overleaf's free plan allows one collaborator per project, so a three author paper puts you on a paid plan or back on email attachments. This is the most common reason people go looking for an alternative in the first place.

Markdown authoring. A paper is roughly ninety percent ordinary prose and ten percent things that genuinely need LaTeX. Most editors make you pay LaTeX syntax overhead on the ninety. Writing prose as prose and dropping into LaTeX only where it matters is a real difference in how the work feels, which we went into separately.

Editing files on your own disk. Your manuscript is years of work. If it exists only inside somebody's web app, your ability to leave depends entirely on their export tool and their continued existence.

Bring your own API key. Supply your own key and you control which provider sees your unpublished manuscript, and you pay inference costs directly instead of through a subscription margin. Very few hosted editors allow it.

A signed provenance record. Journals, funders and thesis committees increasingly ask authors to account for AI involvement. Every tool here helps you write. Almost none help you demonstrate what you did.

Overleaf is still the default, and often correctly

More than a decade in production, a toolchain that handles the package long tail better than anything newer, and direct relationships with a large number of publishers, so many journals ship an official Overleaf template with a submission link. If your venue has one, that is a real advantage nobody else currently matches.

The constraints sit on the free tier: one collaborator per project, a shorter compile timeout, and full version history, track changes and Dropbox/GitHub sync reserved for paid plans. Whether that matters depends entirely on whether you are hitting those limits. If you are not, switching costs you more than it saves. Where TeXposit fits

Real-time collaboration with unlimited collaborators and full version history on the free tier, because a three author paper should not require a subscription. Every project is a git repository and every save is an attributed commit. The hybrid .md format lets you write prose as prose and drop into LaTeX where you need it. Local file sync edits a project directly on your own disk, and GitHub sync keeps a repository in step. It runs on European infrastructure and is GDPR compliant.

You can bring your own API key, or point the assistant at a local model through Ollama so an unpublished manuscript never leaves your machine. The assistant searches real academic databases and inserts real BibTeX rather than generating citations from memory, which matters now that fabricated references carry a one year arXiv ban.

And every project accumulates a signed provenance record of who wrote what and how much was AI assisted, exportable as a report a third party can verify.

Where we are the wrong choice

We are in public beta and Overleaf is not. For a thesis due in six weeks, boring and proven is a feature, and we would rather you finished your thesis than migrated halfway through it.

Our package coverage is good but newer, so an unusual class file is likelier to surprise us than to surprise Overleaf. Test yours before committing anything. If your journal has an official Overleaf template with a direct submission link, that is a genuine advantage we cannot match, and if your whole lab already works in one tool, that inertia is worth real money in saved friction.

If you write alone and want a mature desktop workflow, TeXstudio or VS Code will serve you better than any hosted editor, ours included. If your paper is inseparable from your analysis, CoCalc is a more sensible home for both. And Typst is worth a look if no template constrains you, though it does not yet have the publisher ecosystem.

A word on the newer arrivals

Most of the AI native tools launched recently are hosted, closed, and venture funded, which means the answer to "what happens to my manuscript if this company pivots or shuts down" is whatever their export button does on the day you find out. They are also young enough that the template libraries and package coverage the incumbents accumulated over a decade are still being built. Some are genuinely pleasant to use. A tool holding your dissertation is still worth judging on how it behaves in year three rather than week one.

The other thing worth developing a nose for is manufactured credibility. Bibby AI is the clearest example currently in the market. Its headline numbers trace to two preprints its own team posted to arXiv, the second of which, arXiv:2602.16432, is titled, exactly as arXiv displays it, "Bibby AI -- AI Latex Editor writing assistant for researchers vs Overleaf Alternative vs OpenAI Prism. (Bibby AI Latex Editor)". It has never been peer reviewed, lists no institutional affiliation, and names "Nilesh jain, Rohit Yadav, Andrej Karpathy" as its authors. The often quoted 91.4% error detection figure and the "more than 5,000 active researchers across more than 50 subscribing universities" claim both come from inside that document, measured on a benchmark the same authors built, with no public data or code we could find. Separately, ailatexeditor.com calls itself "an independent review site" and "not affiliated with any editor" in its footer, ranks Bibby first at 9.8 out of 10, links to trybibby.com throughout, and publishes no ownership information or author attribution anywhere.

We have not audited that editor and this is not a review of it. Try it if you like. Just notice that every impressive number attached to it originates from the company, and apply the same test to us: ask which claims on this page you can check without taking our word for it.
